Artist Statement:
“A strong emphasis on my work is to hold true to the vision while remaining free in the ideas and visceral actions.”
York’s work is gestural and process driven, often exploring materiality, concepts and images sourced from lived experiences. The artist delights in the possibilities of a non-objective approach to painting and what is unseen is as foundational as to what is seen. His paintings are formal experiments in which competing aesthetic positions co-exist, often within the same work. They are produced from an ongoing process of self-examination and improvisation in which the desired result is not only a visual revelation but also the continual rediscovery of art in the moment.
