ABOUT LAST LAP:

Cody York blends industrial nostalgia with dynamic movement by reimagining the iconic silhouette of a vintage 1967 Volkswagen Beetle through the lens of racing. Known for his process driven approach across multiple mediums, York embodies its stripped down core essence, transforming its familiar, rounded curves into a powerful exploration of speed, materiality, and form.

ARTISTIC PROCESS:

Hung nose first from a steel crane, the vintage Volkswagen Beetle became a vertical canvas for Cody York’s visceral exploration of racing abstraction. By elevating the car into this gravity defying position, York subverted its traditional weight and utility, transforming the iconic automotive form into an imposing monolith.

Standing above the vehicle, York poured vibrant streams of orange and yellow paint directly down the center of its distressed black, white and grey painted shell. As the paint cascaded downward, it responded dynamically to the Bug's rounded contours, tracking its familiar shape before breaking into raw, unpredictable drips. This process driven act fused the clean, aerodynamic lines of the historic vehicle with the chaotic energy of action painting. The resulting streaks of brilliant color mimic the blur of a racetrack and the raw sensation of high speed velocity, leaving a permanent, frozen record of gravity and momentum on the car's surface.

Splitting the entire sculpture directly down the the center is a razor thin, blindingly clean neon light. This pure, neon tube remains completely untouched by the surrounding violence, serving as a hyper focused visual anchor that represents the driver’s absolute concentration and the unchanging racing line.

LAST LAP serves as a powerful conceptual anchor, evoking the ultimate, high stakes moment of a race where speed, endurance, and mechanical strain collide. York frames the orange and yellow as the fiery blur of a vehicle pushing past its absolute limits. The title LAST LAP infuses the sculpture with a sense of finality and triumph, immortalizing the historic Bug not as a forgotten relic of the past, but as an enduring symbol of momentum caught in its final, most vibrant burst of glory.
