Cody York

The Artling releases ELEVATIONS ( c.2022 ) by Cody York. A collection of 6 unique monochrome prints that depict rugged snow-capped mountains amidst the backdrop of atmospheric clouds in the sky.

Created from memory impressions using a rich black and white oil palette, these works capture layers of peaks and plateaus, seemingly sculpted out of snow and shadows, reaching for the heavens. They mark a natural evolution in York’s own practice, and his engagement with the tension between realism and abstraction.

The interrelation between humanity and the natural environment is an important theme: York said that he wants the works “to feel like the feeling we get when we are totally immersed in nature and in its purest form.”

York’s work is gestural and process driven, often exploring materiality, concepts and images sourced from lived experiences. For York, the progression of art is not a linear development, but rather an inexhaustible exchange of aesthetic moments between the past and present. York’s work is held in private collections worldwide.
