York’s work is gestural and process driven, often exploring materiality, concepts and images sourced from lived experiences. The artist delights in the possibilities of a non-objective approach to painting and what is unseen is as foundational as to what is seen. His paintings are formal engagements in which competing positions co-exist, often within the same work. For York, the progression of art is not a linear development, but rather an inexhaustible exchange of aesthetic moments between the past and present.
